Small tent with standing headroom - ADVrider

The next thing to remember that the 9 foot upright was designed for a un-shrunk new tent plus the period idea was dig holes in the earth (sometimes rather deep) so the uprights were just the right height everytime. This method works well if you were the officer to be housed in the Small Wall Tent and there were plenty of privates assigned in setting up your tent. More practically, once you have your tent fitted with a correct sized ridge pole, you can set up the tent and measure the exact height the uprights need to be for your tent. I actually use a small 2X4 block of lumber under each upright to keep the poles from sinking in to possibly wet soil - this will effect the height also.

The document that you are referencing is the Quartermaster Supply Catalog QM 3-4 probably dated 1945. You can see that the list of component parts does not include side poles. For a tent the size of the small wall tent, these poles really aren't necessary.
